Why Donald Trump's Latest Cabinet Pick Is Controversial but Likely History-Making

After a Wednesday night time tweet from the president, the White Home confirmed Thursday morning that the U.S. ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, will take over because the appearing director of nationwide intelligence.

Grenell, a staunch Trump ally and defender who previously worked for President George W. Bush‘s administration, is believed to be the first brazenly gay man in a cabinet-level place, The New York Times reported.

President Donald Trump announced the information on Wednesday night on Twitter, whereas the White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, made an official assertion the subsequent morning.

“I am pleased to announce that our highly revered Ambassador to Germany, @RichardGrenell, will turn out to be the Appearing Director of National Intelligence,” Trump, 73, wrote. “Rick has represented our Nation exceedingly properly and I look ahead to working with him.”

Grenell’s position as “appearing” director means he'll solely have the ability to serve within the position for a maximum of 210 days, according to NPR.

He may even continue to hold his ambassadorship whereas he serves in his new position.

Critics have been quick to level out that Grenell, 53, has no intelligence expertise to convey to the position.

Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat who is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, voiced his displeasure on Twitter late Wednesday night time.

“It seems the President has selected an individual *with none intelligence expertise* to function the chief of the nation’s intelligence group in an appearing capacity…,” Warner wrote in a five-part thread blasting the president’s choice to select Grenell.
