Fly or Flop – Overcoming the Fear of Failure
The only failure is not to attempt.

A number of years ago, I used to be in Montreal visiting a pal and she or he instructed I'm going flying.
“Flying?” I stated. “As in…a aircraft?”
“No,” she stated. “In a wind tunnel. It’s kinda like skydiving only you don’t have to leap out of a aircraft.”
The subsequent thing I knew we have been standing subsequent to the wind tunnel, checking on availability for the day. Fortunately, there wasn’t room for me to fly till 5 o’clock that evening.
“I dunno,” I stated to my pal, as we have been standing on the desk. “I don’t need to reduce brief our day of sightseeing by having to rush again here. And it’s kinda costly. And…”
She seemed me. “And…?”
I shrugged. “And what if I don’t get it?”
She laughed. “You’ll get it. They train you all the things you could know, and an teacher is with you the entire time. It’s totally protected.”
“Why don’t you go upstairs and watch,” the woman at the desk recommended. “The instructors will probably be doing a demo in a few minutes.”
So we did. And let me inform you, these instructors (probably skilled skydivers) have been flying around that wind tunnel like no one’s enterprise! They have been doing backflips and kicking off from the edges and whipping round in circles and capturing, lightning-quick, from the grate on the bottom to the very prime.
As I used to be staring in awe at the airborne gymnastics inside the wind tunnel, my pal seemed over at me and stated, “You gained’t be doing any of that sort of stuff.”
Positive sufficient, after the professionals had completed their demo of the cool tips, they returned to the enterprise of helping schmucks like me attempt the fundamentals of flying, which appeared to entail mendacity spread-eagled in your abdomen, like Superman, and making an attempt not to drop right down to the grate on the bottom where the wind was blasting up via.
However judging from the number of people that, despite the trainer’s repeated hand alerts and precise hands-on assistance, stored dropping like a stone in the direction of the grate then flopping around like a fish out of water, it seemed fairly tough to do appropriately i.e. stay in the air…to fly.
As I stood there, watching a number of totally different individuals try—with combined outcomes—to fly, making an attempt to determine whether or not or not I needed to offer it a go, I requested myself: “What’s the worst that would occur?”
My reply?
That I might fail. That I might overlook what the hand alerts meant. That I, too, would drop to the grate on the backside and flop around like an enormous fat fish in a decent flight go well with, whereas little youngsters tapped on the window and laughed.
But then I asked myself: so what?
So I signed up for the 5 o’clock time slot.
And when 5 p.m. rolled round, I listened rigorously to my (slightly cute French Canadian) teacher’s detailed instructions. I studied the hand alerts on the wall as if my life trusted it. Despite the fact that my life didn’t, my ego definitely did. Then I climbed into my flight go well with, put in earplugs, donned my helmet and safety glasses and awaited my flip to fly…or not.
However I DID fly! Positive, I dropped down in the direction of the grate a few occasions originally but when my instructor gave me the sign to straighten my legs, I did so…and voila! Up I floated.
Apparently, the key to flying (in a wind tunnel anyway) is to show the utmost quantity of 1’s physique surface to the wind. And the tiniest tweak in a single’s place could be a deciding issue as as to if one floats or sinks.
Likewise, another trick we have been taught is to maintain our chin up because that ensures our again is arched, thereby exposing extra floor space on the entrance of your body to the wind.
I liked the expertise of flying. I beloved how I overcame my worry of forgetting and/or failing and/or wanting like an fool. I beloved the sense of accomplishment that came from succeeding at something utterly new to me.
Principally, nevertheless, I liked how excited my pal was to encourage and cheer me on. It was an excellent reminder concerning the significance of having a cheering squad, no matter what we’re doing, in addition to being on the cheering squad for others in our lives.
