Cash Transfers in Urban Crises: Do They Work for Women?
Twenty months on from the earthquakes in Nepal, new analysis will look at whether money transfers are helping ladies to participate in, and contribute to, the Kathmandu Valley’s local financial system.
Our research started in Kirtipur – an historic metropolis 5km south-west of Kathmandu – in a area people centre. 13 ladies have been sharing their day-to-day experiences because the devastating earthquakes that struck Nepal in April and Might of 2015.
To help earthquake victims, the Nepali government and international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) arrange emergency cash transfer programmes. What’s still unclear, and what our research will discover, is how money transfers in these contexts can empower ladies to interact in and contribute to the financial system over the long run.
Numerous INGOs in Kirtipur have carried out cash for work programmes, offering cost for work reminiscent of clearing rubble and debris.

- Interviews with ladies who've acquired emergency money transfers from the state, INGOs or each – and people who haven’t
- Focus group discussions with other women and men locally, and
- Key informant interviews with humanitarian programme employees.
