A romantic fantasy filmed without dialogue, “Fortunate Hen” is a quirky modern-day fairy story a few butcher, baker and candlestick maker, set on an enthralling London block. A down-on-his-luck baker can’t appear to catch a break — his retailer is empty, and the candlestick maker he’s in love with doesn’t seem to know he’s even there. However then his fortunes start to reverse when he encounters a magic hen, who can lay fantastical eggs that change his life. Starring actor Will Merrick, who appeared on cult British show “Skins,” the movie has a distinctively shiny, whimsical look, because of cinematographer Oliver Clubb, making it a pleasure to observe. Advised without dialogue, the story — based mostly on an award-winning script from Matthew Stallworthy — strikes nimbly, with the assistance from expressive performances and a spritely, elegant score. By the time it reaches its charming ending, “Fortunate Hen” could have enchanted viewers with its mix of wit and whimsy.
